Cabinet Drawer Front Options

The most common drawer front construction options are shown above and include:

Five-piece construction with standard rails, the same width as the drawer front stiles and slab drawer fronts are the most popular options. Five-piece construction with standard rails create a uniform look when the cabinet doors are cope and stick construction and drawer front frame width matches the doors.

When cabinets are designed with small drawer front heights, reduced drawer front rails can allow for smaller drawer fronts without having to switch to slab construction. For safety and manufacturing reasons, below specific height requirements, drawer fronts need to be switched to slab construction.

If you have very short drawer fronts and want a look that is as close to the door profile as possible, you can reduce the rail size to 1-5/8” for our cope and stick doors to reduce overall drawer height, or use a slab drawer front with similar outside edge.

Below are minimum drawer heights with reduced and standard rail sizes. Raised panel cope and stick cabinet doors require minimum sizes in order for the panel detail to be visible on all sides and include a flat raised panel area. Depending on the panel profile and the width of the panel reveal, for aesthetic reasons, you may not want to order drawer fronts at minimum height with a raised panel, and instead go with a slab drawer front.

Minimum drawer front heights:
6-1/2” with reduced rails and raised panel
5” with reduced rails and flat panel
4” with slab drawer front.

TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company’s slab drawer fronts are available in vertical or horizontal grain.

Standard grain direction on slab solid wood drawer fronts is horizontal, however standard grain direction on 4S and  veneer doors and drawer fronts is vertical. Be sure to specify desired grain direction on your drawer front order.
