TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company’s lumber supplier is located onsite at their manufacturing facility in Taylor, Texas, with the lumber warehouse just a short forklift ride away from the entrance to TaylorCraft’s loading dock. This close proximity has given TaylorCraft the ability to provide their lumber supplier immediate feedback on lumber quality and create true just-in-time deliveries.
One of the other benefits of this close proximity has been the ability to fine tune lumber grades to best suit their specific needs as an upper-end, custom cabinet door builder.
“Over the years we have developed proprietary grades of lumber specific to our company, our products and our customers’ needs. We are a large customer to our lumber supplier so this gives us buying power and leverage in really customizing the wood grades, and it helps our lumber yield tremendously, says Heide Osborn, Marketing Director. She continues, “We know what our customers are looking for in a select, natural or paint-grade material and it varies by wood species. We fine-tune our grading to give customers the best quality at the price point they are looking for.”
TaylorCraft says the custom lumber grades and savings in yield allow them to provide cabinetmakers with a high quality product at a competitive price.
On their website TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company suggests customers consider lumber yield in their decision whether to outsource cabinet doors. They assert that if cabinetmakers factor in the true cost of making their own doors, including a thorough look at yield lost due to lumber processing and internal remakes, with the savings in overhead and tooling, and added selection and material quality afforded by outsourcing, the decision to outsource cabinet doors is compelling.
