TaylorCraft’s patent pending 4S cabinet doors and skinny shaker cabinet doors have narrow frame widths, so traditional knob and pull hardware placement on stiles and rails does not work well aesthetically or functionally. Knobs and pulls should not be installed on the narrow 4S frame or the narrow frames of skinny shaker doors.
However, because hardware placement is not restricted to the stile and rail, 4S and skinny shaker doors have many more hardware placement options than traditional cabinet doors.
We’ve fielded a lot of questions from cabinetmakers and homeowners regarding recommended placement of hardware on 4S, and skinny or narrow shaker doors so we updated our popular hardware placement guide to include these trending cabinet door styles and attached the updated pdf below.
*As always, before drilling hardware holes, test hardware placement to make sure there are no issues visually or mechanically due to the specific hardware design and adjust placement as needed. Use caution in increased overlay applications. Placing the hole/screw where it overlays a surface could result in damage from screw impact. Counter sinking the screw could alleviate this.
TaylorCraft’s 4S frames are true 3/4” thick at the frame, to accommodate standard European hinges. 4S panels and many skinny shaker door panels are recessed 1/8” from face of frame, so pull/knob screw length may need adjustment to fit 5/8” thickness.
Below is an example of hardware screw hole placement on TaylorCraft’s 4S cabinet door in 3/4″ Shaker, Alder as well as others’ Slim Shaker, Skinny Shaker and Narrow Shaker doors: Measure 1″ over from the left or right inside of the frame, depending on door swing, and 1.5″ up from the bottom or down from the top of the frame depending on whether the door is on an upper or base cabinet.
